Soozhou is one of the places where the wealthy considered it gauche to flaunt their wealth - this is, after all, the land of scholars and poets and beautiful maidens. From the outside gates, the private gardens are discreetly nondescript; inside, however, are absolute secret gardens, privy to the owners and their immediate circles.
I love the word "brolly," as my London expat friend Sara refers to my umbrella. Took me a while to figure out what the heck it was.
